I don't think I've mentioned Fran Matera much here, but he's an almost 82
year old cartoonist that lives close to me. And he's the real deal. Worked
with Will Eisner on Quality Comics and the Doll Man feature, worked on
"Kerry Drake,", took over from Milton Caniff on Dickie Dare and lots of
other work. A Bruce Lee feature, worked with Dick Giordano on Treasure Chest
comics in the '60's. He's got a great story about Giordano calling Fran a
sissy because he was inking with a size 4 Winsor Newton instead of a 5.
"You're a sissy, you can get those thin lines with the 5 just like a 4." Can
you imagine a size 5 brush? Ha-ha. I can't.
Anyway, I bought a page of Fran's art from a dealer at a local show a few years ago. When
I learned he lived in Safety Harbor which is close by to me, well, a few months later
I thought I would look him up. So I called him.
He's a great guy and we've struck up a friendship. I built this website to
talk about his career and put stuff online: Here's the
bio
page and also there's a bunch of other pages and images to check out there.
I've got more of his art and we've met on a few occasions at shows
and had a super time chatting comic strips and looking through art.
So check out the site and click around. There's tons of stuff on there and loads of his Chuck White material is archived here online:
P.s.
Whole stories from Fran's Chuck White
Treasure Chest material from the early 1960's are a particular favorite of mine. And there's tons of them online here
